The Paul Thomas Anderson film, PTA as some are referring to him. Has his latest film coming to VOD this week.
“One Battle After Another.” Telling the story of what happens after an evil enemy resurfaces after 16 years, a group of ex-revolutionaries reunite to rescue the daughter of one of their own.
The film was an almost three-hour epic that was embraced by critics and audience members.
After marketing and its rather hefty budget, the film was projected to lose Warner Brothers $ 100 million for its theatrical release.
However, that means something, yet very little in the age of home video. Since the 90s and the rise of home video. Studios have made their money back three times over in video sales.
With VOD on the rise, allowing audience members to see the movie up to a month before the physical media release. This helps drive sales and shortens, if not completely eliminates, any loss.
“Fight Club” is a perfect example of this. Back in 1999, it was a box office bomb that almost cost David Fincher his career. But thanks to home video. The movie not only found its audience and made its money back but also went on to become a cult classic.
Given “One Battle After Another” run time, I am not surprised by its lack of theatrical success. However, given the names in the film and the critical and audience praise, I think it will have a second life on VOD.
