Now Is The Perfect Time For The Rebirth Of Sex Comedies.

By: Dominic La-Viola

Sex comedies, like many genres before it, have died long ago, with little to no hope for a rebirth.

There was a glimmer of hope, with Jennifer Lawrence’s “No Hard Feelings”, which was a fantastic film. Downright hilarious in all the raw and raunchy ways we know and love.

When  “Anyone But You” came out, there was serious talk of the rebirth of a dead genre, that no one was really making anymore. Romantic comedies.

Although, while there have been multiple  new “romantic comedies” that have come out since the release of “Anyone But You”. They’re not the same.

The films in which are being produced are more drama/ comedy. Focusing more on the dramatic aspect, being a lot more insightful and story-driven. Rather than being a light, fun movie that we are used to seeing.

Something new, while being something familiar. Yet never quite capturing the tone and feeling that audiences are yearning for.

Now, to say audiences members are dying for more of the classic style of sex comedies would be up in the air. Zoomers are said to want less sex and nudity in their TV shows and movies.

While there’s no record or data  on Millennials , Gen X, or the boomers. It is safe to say that the nostalgia tone and feel of a modern-day “American Pie” would play out well with older audiences.

In the age of remakes and reboots. The perfect way to test the waters, while banking off exciting IP, which studios just love to do… I have the perfect pitch. Although, I don’t think Disney would go for it, even under the Fox label.

Remake “The Girl Next Door”. Yes, I said remake, something I almost never wish happens,  especially to one of my favorite movies. A sex comedy with heart and wit.

Although, this would be the perfect film to roll out and rebirth the genre, and here’s why.

“The Girl Next Door” was about a high school senior who’s uptight, about to graduate, but never truly experienced high school. Then a young, attractive girl moves in next door, who just happens to be an ex-porn star. To which cue in the love interest and muse.

The film is very much inspired by the iconic 80’s movie “Risky Business” but has its own spin. One that is a little more far-fetched than its inspiration.

However, set in modern times, switching her profession from ex-porn star to ex-OF model would not only ground the film but make it more culturally relevant.

Capturing the essence of the 90’s and 00’s sex comedies like “American Pie” and “The Girl Next Door”.  All while like “Risky Business”, giving the film the opportunity to be insightful and reflective of the times. Making it more than merely a sex comedy.

As “Risky Business” is more than just a sex comedy, like countless films that came out just before it.  Capturing this mix of rampant materialism, unabashed self-interest, and entrepreneurial hustle. Something that was very much a reflection of its time and the subculture of Ronald Reagan’s optimistic theme of recovery and renewal in a free world market. Selling a dream and fulfillment. Just as the ending line Joel says. “I deal in human fulfillment”

Mantis – A Killer Kung Fu Film That Surprisingly Doesn’t Go For The Jugular.

By: Dominic La-Viola

Netflix’s “Mantis” is a killer, modern-day kung fu film that blends the art of 70’s-style kung fu films with modern times for casual audiences.

From the start of the film, it goes without saying that this character is the “John Wick” of his universe, and it’s not only made known by how people react to him but also shown through arguably great hand-to-hand combat scenes.

However, the film takes a quick turn and becomes something different, but not less. Focusing more on the relationships and the character of “Mantis” rather than just the legend that is “Mantis”.

While watching the film, the sudden change in tone and lack of action did come as a disappointment. For going into it, I had been expecting more action and less story development.

However, the film takes a very different approach to an all-too-familiar story. Instead of focusing on the killings, making the action the centerpiece of the film.

Director Lee Tae-sung takes us on a journey through the life of a cold-blooded assassin by focusing on the other side of the man, the myth, the legend.

Instead of recreating “John Wick”, but with a focus on hand-to-hand combat fight scenes, using knives and melee weapons instead of guns.

Lee Tae-sung takes us into the personal life and the intricacies of the criminal underworld. Similar to that of “John Wick”, however, focuses more on the characters than the action itself.

Which, during my viewing, I found to be underwhelming and very disappointing. For going into this film, I was expecting a lot more blood, cutting, killing, and incredible, mind-blowing choreographed fight sequences. Ones that were on the same level as early kung fu films.

Overall, after the film ended and the credits began to roll, I immediately began to appreciate this film for what it was, instead of what I expected to be.

While there are slow moments, or should I say, there are more character-driven moments than action ones.

The film successfully conveys the story in which it sets out to tell. Even though it’s not the story in which one would expect to be told, given the circumstances. A film that I plan on watching again soon. For now that   I know what to expect, I feel I will better appreciate the film for what it is.

James Cameron Reflects on Almost Directing Jurassic Park

By:Dominic La-Viola

James Cameron opens up about how he lost the opportunity to not only direct “Jurassic Park” but own the rights to the franchise.

Cameron revealed that he almost bought the rights to Michael Crichton’s novel, which was the source material for “Jurassic Park”, but Steven Spielberg bet him on it, but only for a few hours.

Since then, Cameron has made the statement that Spielberg  was the right  man for the job. Saying in a recent interview:

“He was the right guy to make it,” Cameron said in a new interview with Empire magazine. “Not me, because I would have made it too terrifying and R-rated. It would have been Aliens with dinosaurs.”

Now, as much as I love the “Jurassic Park” movies, I can’t help but wonder how astonishing it would have been to see Cameron’s Jurassic Park.

The film definitely wouldn’t have been as successful as it was. Given its family-oriented vibes and pg-13 rating.

Instead of making “Jurassic Park”, Cameron went on to make “True Lies”, and we ended up getting a classic, with what feels like unlimited sequels.

Deadpool and Wolverine Director Shawn Levy Gets Free Rain on Star Wars Movie.

By:Dominic La-Viola

Director Shawn Levy sat down with “the business podcast”  for an interview to promote his new film “Star Wars Starfighter”.

“There is no mandate or interference other than the constant encouragement to make this new,” Levy told The Business podcast. “And that’s the truth… Starfighter is all new characters, based on new ideas that Jonathan [Tropper] and I cooked up alone and together.”

With the only note that was given from the studio was to make it “new”. Which, honestly, sounds more like a green light to make it your own.

Instead of taking the cookie-cutter route, as they have with the previous films. Running the franchise right into the ground,

“It’s still terrifying. Let me make that clear. You still want to get it right. And having gone to Star Wars Celebration with [Ryan] Gosling, the appetite of the fan base and the expectations of the fan base is intense. And it’s palpable. But most of all, what I learned in Tokyo is the thirst for something new at this moment in time. So I feel lucky that that’s what I’m making right now.”

Levy went on to say in the interview, expressing that, yes, he does have more creative freedom than on other projects. Without question, more freedom than everyone else when it comes to a “Star Wars” film. Although that doesn’t make it any easier. Having huge shoes to fill and expectations to live up to.

Sydney Sweeney’s next project is A Live-Action Anime â€śGundam.”

By: Dominic La-Viola

Noah Centineo is in talks to join Sydney Sweeney in her next project, “Gundam,” a movie. An adaptation of the classic anime series.

Jim Mickle, the writer/director of the “Sweet Tooth” series on Netflix, is set to direct.

Noah Centineo is currently filming “Street Fighter” for Legendary Studios, which is slated to come out next year in 2026.  Although a spokesman for Legendary has yet to confirm anything, negotiations are underway.

It is said that the film is going to be centered around Sydney Sweeney’s character, and that the potential part in which he would play is opposite her.

In “Gundam,” her character and the male lead character are very much like “Romeo and Juliet” star-crossed lovers. The major difference being that instead of families, it’s planets that are at war with each other.

If they do cast him in the role, it would do wonders for the production. For he has “Street Fighter” coming out in October 2026 and is shooting the “Rambo” prequel film early next year. Making him an up-and-coming star.

SISU: Road To Revenge- The Film Should Have Ended Long Before It Began.

By: Dominic La-Viola

The film should have ended long before it even began. This is the follow-up to “SISU”. There is no need to see the first film because this one sums it up in 15 seconds of monologue at the beginning of the film. Although, just because you don’t need to see the first film, doesn’t mean you should see this one.

The film realistically should have ended within 5 minutes of it beginning. Since our protagonist had the opportunity and skill set to kill our antagonist. Dead to rights. No questions asked. Bluntly proven to us. Telling us he could have, but chose not to.

The film is marketed as a revenge film, yet the entire plot of the movie has nothing to do with revenge. Our protagonist, the Finland Commender, whose family was brutally murder, and he took revenge and went on to become a legend, based on the events in the first film that is.

Now, he simply goes to his old property, which is now in the land of the Soviet Union. To take down his house, log by log, to rebuild it back on Finnish land. For obvious sentimental reasons.

At no point was he out for revenge.  Which he could have easily gotten in the first five minutes of the movie before the action even really began.

There is very little dialogue in the movie, which would work perfectly. Since it is an action-driven film. Following the steps of “Silent Night” and “John Wick 4”.

Yet the action by definition is god-awful. The storyline has more plot holes in it than the dead bodies have bullet holes.

The film is tone-deaf and flat-out incoherent. The film lacks luster, style, and direction to even come close to being a great or even good action movie.

Almost none of the action sequences are realistic or even plausible. We are shown nothing to prove or convince us that this man is a legendary killer.

When we live in a world where there have been so many great action films that show you what a great action movie consists of and what makes them great. This is an example of what not to do.

Whether you’re going for a realistic style, like “John Wick”. Where all the shoot-out scenes are realistic, look and feel legitimate and accurately portrayed, or a

John Woo style film. Where there’s an unrealistic amount of gunfire, with slow motion, intense shootouts and wall-to-wall insanity.

Even JCVD movies from the 90’s gave us action movies with unrealistic action scenes and shootouts. That are obviously over the top for dramatic effect. Yet have a signature style that captivates and draws you in, for its sheer chewiness. Whereas this film falls flat on every aspect and route it could have taken.

At one point in the movie, they literally have our hero walk through broken glass, from a whisky bottle that falls right before his feet. Where it would literally be easier and more natural to just step over it based on his height and distance from the glass.

Making it so unnatural and forced. Trying to convince us that this man is more than just a man. A myth, some type of legend.  But instead, simply comes off as sheer nonsense and a desperate attempt to put our protagonist on the pedestal.

Overall, the film lacks vision, style, and substance. Some may argue that it’s a genre action film. Nevertheless, that may be true. However, that doesn’t excuse the lack of craftsmanship. To defend this movie as a “genre” film would be a disservice to the genre of “genre” films.

Overall rating: 2/5.

The Threesome – A New Style of Romantic Comedy

By: Dominic La-Viola

“The Threesome” offers a new perspective and style to the genre of rom-coms. Adding to the already growing subgenre of the classic film genre staple.

Now, before seeing the film, I had no real idea what the movie was about. Only that Zoey Duetch was starring in it. Although the fact that Zoey Duetch was starring in it was really all I needed to know to be intrigued to see it.

I find her to be one of the most underrated actors of her generation. I hope that her role in Richard Linklater’s new film “ Nouvelle Vague” changes that, and the industry and the world recognize her talent. I feel she is a lot like Kristen Stewart in that way.

The film’s title does give the viewer a misconception of what the film is going to be. For it sounds like either a drama or a sex comedy, but never would I have pegged it as a rom-com.

Now, with that being said, the film does have some issues. One of its main issues is the overall storyline. While everything that happens is very realistic, in the sense that it could happen. The probably aspect is where things get wonky and weird.

For the premise of one guy getting two separate girls pregnant within the same week is very much possible and could happen. To which, to which I’m sure it has happened before and is more common than one might think.

Although that’s not something that is often seen or talked about, which does add to the film’s cheesiness. Not to mention that he unintentionally had a threesome, to which he wasn’t against but didn’t prefer, at first due to his undying love for the best friend and love interest. Which was not only one of the girls in the threesome but the one who initiated it.

Even with all the tongue-in-cheek dialog and moments in which things feel off kilter. The characters are just so charming and charismatic and fun to watch that looking past the story’s problems is all too easy.

While you’re never truly vested in the idea that it is likely or that the stars would even align up so well. The film takes a hard right turn and completely shatters everything. All while maintaining its core structure. Leaving you baffled.

The film’s approach works because at no point does the film go too far in either direction.

Finding this bliss in its well-centered balance. Equals parts romance and comedy. Making for one incredibly enjoyable romantic comedy that you never knew you wanted to see.

Overall, the film does have its fair share of tongue-in-cheek moments, along with chewy dialogue.

At no point would I call this a great movie, lacking a clear direction and tone, along with being overall a little too loosely fit. Not quite making the cut to be among the greats.

I feel like this film will lose some due to its inability to choose a side. Rom-com or sex comedy. While some films can work magic in this field, “American Pie 2,” for example. It’s a hard sell, and this one misses the beat. Just slightly. Not raunchy enough to be a great sex comedy, yet misses the mark of a great rom-com.

Nevertheless, I absolutely love this movie for what it is. A fun, rom-com with a twist. Falling in that sweet spot, better than a guilty pleasure film, but not quite a staple of the genre.

Alita Sequel Is Coming, And They Made A Blood Oath To Ensure It.

By: Dominic La-Viola

“Robert Rodriguez and I have sworn a blood oath to do at least one more Alita movie. In fact, we’re thinking of an architecture that bridges to a third film, but we’ll be satisfied if we can make one more. And we’re making progress on that.”

James Cameron told Empire Magazine in an interview when asked about a sequel to the 2019 film “Alita: Battle Angel”.

To which he thanked the fans for their devotion and loyalty to Alita.

Continuing with “Now that I have a home in Austin, Texas, about three miles from [Robert’s] place, I think we’ll probably get more serious about that as soon as I wrap the mix here in a few weeks,” referring to his newest film “Avatar Fire and Ash” which hits theaters this December.

Blood oath or not, I find it hard to believe that a sequel is coming. The first film came out almost 7 years ago, and they’re not even done with a script for the second.

Not to be a Debbie downer, but at this rate, I don’t see the film getting made.

The film did do well at the box office, with a 404 million dollar worldwide earnings on a 107 million dollar budget.

Which shows promise, the studios are always willing to make sequels to films that already have a fan base and established IP. Although waiting this long for a sequel is never a good thing.

So for now, only time will tell if we will ever actually get a sequel to this cult classic hit.

Sentimental Value Sweeps Nominations for European Film Awards.

By: Dominic La-Viola

It has been announced that “Sentimental Value” has come out as the leading film in the European film awards nominations, earning itself a total of 5 nominations.

While the next best film earned only four with “Sirãt,” then “Sound of Falling” and “It Was Just an Accident” tie with three each.

Now there is no link between the Oscars and the European film awards. Although they are the equivalent of the Academy Awards.

Which, along with the critical praise the film has been receiving, it would not be wrong to say that this film is a serious Oscar contender.

As of yet, there has been no “ for your consideration” advertisement on any of the usual spots, although that doesn’t mean they’re not in the fight. For the film has yet to hit theaters.

“Sentimental Value” opens in select theaters this weekend.

Christian Bale to Star in Heat 2 Alongside Leonardo DiCaprio

By:Dominic La-Viola

It has been reported that Michael Mann wants Christian Bale for a title character opposite DiCaprio for the next film “Heat 2”.

Which is based on the New York best-selling novel, written by Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner. He has penned the script already, and the film is to begin production early next year.

The story isn’t just a sequel, but a prequel. Taking the audience through the events that happened after the guest went bad, following Shiherlis as he tries to evade the LAPD and Hanna following the bank robbery. Taking us to new territory in the tri-border zone and Southeast Asia.

While the second half is a look at their lives prior to this, their origin story, so to speak. Leading up to the events that happened in “Heat”.

If done correctly and pulled off just right, “Heat 2” could just put high-stakes heist films back on top.

With a cast like this, Mann has the star power and talent to make a film as iconic as the original.
