Sex comedies, like many genres before it, have died long ago, with little to no hope for a rebirth.
There was a glimmer of hope, with Jennifer Lawrence’s “No Hard Feelings”, which was a fantastic film. Downright hilarious in all the raw and raunchy ways we know and love.
When “Anyone But You” came out, there was serious talk of the rebirth of a dead genre, that no one was really making anymore. Romantic comedies.
Although, while there have been multiple new “romantic comedies” that have come out since the release of “Anyone But You”. They’re not the same.
The films in which are being produced are more drama/ comedy. Focusing more on the dramatic aspect, being a lot more insightful and story-driven. Rather than being a light, fun movie that we are used to seeing.
Something new, while being something familiar. Yet never quite capturing the tone and feeling that audiences are yearning for.
Now, to say audiences members are dying for more of the classic style of sex comedies would be up in the air. Zoomers are said to want less sex and nudity in their TV shows and movies.
While there’s no record or data on Millennials , Gen X, or the boomers. It is safe to say that the nostalgia tone and feel of a modern-day “American Pie” would play out well with older audiences.
In the age of remakes and reboots. The perfect way to test the waters, while banking off exciting IP, which studios just love to do… I have the perfect pitch. Although, I don’t think Disney would go for it, even under the Fox label.
Remake “The Girl Next Door”. Yes, I said remake, something I almost never wish happens, especially to one of my favorite movies. A sex comedy with heart and wit.
Although, this would be the perfect film to roll out and rebirth the genre, and here’s why.
“The Girl Next Door” was about a high school senior who’s uptight, about to graduate, but never truly experienced high school. Then a young, attractive girl moves in next door, who just happens to be an ex-porn star. To which cue in the love interest and muse.
The film is very much inspired by the iconic 80’s movie “Risky Business” but has its own spin. One that is a little more far-fetched than its inspiration.
However, set in modern times, switching her profession from ex-porn star to ex-OF model would not only ground the film but make it more culturally relevant.
Capturing the essence of the 90’s and 00’s sex comedies like “American Pie” and “The Girl Next Door”. All while like “Risky Business”, giving the film the opportunity to be insightful and reflective of the times. Making it more than merely a sex comedy.
As “Risky Business” is more than just a sex comedy, like countless films that came out just before it. Capturing this mix of rampant materialism, unabashed self-interest, and entrepreneurial hustle. Something that was very much a reflection of its time and the subculture of Ronald Reagan’s optimistic theme of recovery and renewal in a free world market. Selling a dream and fulfillment. Just as the ending line Joel says. “I deal in human fulfillment”
