Jennifer Dodge Named President of Paramount Animation

By: Dominic La-Viola

In the wake of the exit of former president of Animation, Ramsey Naito, Jennifer Dodge swoops in and takes over Paramount’s animation division.

Dodge was formerly the president of Spin Master Entertainment and is an alum of Nickelodeon. Which shows that she has an extensive background in animation.

Not to mention, she was a producer, working on expanding and developing brands like “Paw Patrol,” whose newest film is getting released next year, along with “Unicorn Academy.” “

“Jennifer is an exceptional creative executive and producer with a proven track record of building franchises that connect with global audiences. Her deep understanding of storytelling, world-building, and brand development make her the ideal leader to shape the next era of Paramount Animation. We’re thrilled to welcome her to the team.”

Said Goldberg and Greenstein in a statement.

According to a source, the previous president of animation left after the  announcement of major layoffs with the merger of Skydance Films.

Some of the upcoming titles that are being released from Paramount Animation titles include “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants”, “The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender”, and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2.”

New Charlie Cox, Zooey Deschanel Rom-Com Coming to Streaming Next Month.

By: Dominic La-Viola

We are getting a new rom-com, just in time for the holidays, and the perk of this particular gift? It’s coming straight to Amazon Prime, from MGM and Amazon Studios.

“Merv”, starring Marvel “Daredevil” star Charlie Cox and Zooey Deschanel from the hit TV show “New Girl”. From director Jessica Swale. Director of “Summerland” and “Leading Lady Parts”.

The film follows a recently separated couple who take their shared dog on a holiday trip to cheer him up, but end up reconnecting romantically.

“Merv” marks the return of Deschanel to the genre of holiday films. After starring in the 2003 cult classic Christmas movie, “Elf” opposite Will Ferrell.

“I loved the story of a couple breaking up but sharing a dog — and then having to reunite to cure their dog’s melancholy,” the actress recently told People about the film. “It just was such a funny concept.”

The trailer is now available to watch via IMDb, or wherever you watch your trailers.

“Merv” will be hitting Prime’s streaming service on December 10th. Just in time for your holiday gathering.

Sydney Sweeney Reflects on Christy Bombing at the Box Office.

By: Dominic La-Viola

â€œI am so deeply proud of this movie,” Sweeney wrote. “Proud of the film David made. Proud of the story we told. Proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin. This experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life.”

Sweeny took to Instagram today, after the weekend box office numbers came in. Following up with this.

“If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded.”

“So yes I’m proud. Why? Because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. And Christy has been the most impactful project of my life. Thank you Christy. I love you,” Sweeney wrote in closing.

Yes, it is indeed true that the film failed to make it in the top ten at the box office this weekend. With a wide release.

Yes, not everyone makes art for the numbers and not every project should be made just for the numbers.

Sweeny’s response to the failure to open for her new film is beyond honorable. She does not throw anyone under the bus or make excuses for the low performance.

However, I am not that person. I will call it, as I see it. This was Black Bear Pictures’ first theatrical release and it shows.

This is a film that I knew about, only from following the festival news, word of mouth, and reading critics’ reviews of the film.

I go to the cinema, at least 3-5 a week. Seeing all types and styles of films, and I have not once seen a trailer for this movie.

If they spent any money on the marketing for this film, I could be completely shocked because I have never seen anything for it. With the exception of the standard movie poster at the theater, in the corner.

Which let’s be honest. That doesn’t promote the film at all. If the film has already generated some buzz, then maybe the posters reignite the spark to see the movie. But one must have known what the movie was prior to that, for that to help.

Not to mention. She is unrecognizable in this film and on the cover art. So her presence on the poster wasn’t going to sell it.

Research shows that the exact amount is not public information, yet sources indicate that the studio gave the film limited marketing support.

In closing, I want to end it with this. The film was far from a failure in the sense of production value and the overall finished product.

The film, without question, was one of the best of the year. It just so happens that it’s one of the least viewed films of the year, in a box office sense.

I’ve said it before, and I am going to say it again. I truly believe that this film is going to be the one that earns Sweeney for his first Oscar nomination.

Box office numbers mean nothing to the Academy. Films that have done less in their initial run have not only been nominated but have won, sweeping the Oscars.

One Battle After Another Gets Digital Release This Week.

By:Dominic La-Viola

The Paul Thomas Anderson film, PTA as some are referring to him. Has his latest film coming to VOD this week.

“One Battle After Another.” Telling the story of  what happens after an evil enemy resurfaces after 16 years, a group of ex-revolutionaries reunite to rescue the daughter of one of their own.

The film was an almost three-hour epic that was embraced by critics and audience members.

After marketing and its rather hefty budget, the film was projected to lose Warner Brothers $ 100 million for its theatrical release.

However, that means something, yet very little in the age of home video. Since the 90s and the rise of home video. Studios have made their money back three times over in video sales.

With VOD on the rise, allowing audience members to see the movie up to a month before the physical media release. This helps drive sales and shortens, if not completely eliminates, any loss.

“Fight Club” is a perfect example of this. Back in 1999, it was a box office bomb that almost cost David Fincher his career. But thanks to home video. The movie not only found its audience and made its money back but also went on to become a cult classic.

Given “One Battle After Another” run time, I am not surprised by its lack of theatrical success. However, given the names in the film and the critical and audience praise, I think it will have a second life on VOD.

Predator Eliminates It’s Competition

By: Dominic La-Viola

The weekend box office numbers are in and it appears that the “Predator” has successes in it’s mission to complete it’s hunt and acquire it’s trophy.

“Predator Badlands” comes in at number one with this weekend with a heroic 40 million in domestic ticket sales. With 80 million world wide it’s opening weekend. On a decent budget of 105 million. Which at this rate it will end up earning it’s money back in no time.

“Regretting You” is still in the fight, in its 3rd week in cinemas. With an impressive 7.1 million domestically. Nothing to ride home about. But still impressive none the less. With a domestic total of 38.5 and a world wide total of 70.9 million on. A 30 million dollar budget. Earning it’s budget back two times over, in just 3 weeks.

Dead is just a word. “Black Phone 2” is anything but dead in the water. Coming in the top three in its 4th week in theaters with 5.3 million domestically. With a total of 70.1 domestically. 120 million globally on a mere 30 million dollar budget. Earning 6 times it’s budget in just a months time. A 3rd installment like the grabber isn’t dead yet.

“Sarah’s Oil” finds it pipe line with a 4.45 million dollar opening and an A+ on cinemascore.

“Nuremberg” Sony’s courtroom drama. Is coming in at only 4 million domestic opening. Not a strong open for a film with a star spelled cast.

“Chainsaw Man” earns Crunchroll another 3.6 million in the domestic market with a total of 137.1 million in domestic box office alone on a minor 4.1 million  budget. Earning over 30 times its budget.

“Bugonia” earns a mere 3.5 million in its 3rd week. Total domestic being 12.3 and 23.1 million globally. On a budget of 55 million.

“Die My Love” 2.83 million opening, with a D+ cinemascore. This psychodrama apparently couldn’t be saved by the dynamic duo of Jennifer Lawerence and Robert Patterson.

“Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” fails to deliver on a 2.3 million domestic earning with a total of 20.4 million total domestic and 34.6 million globally on a minor 55 million dollar budget.

“Torn Ares” continues the disappointment with a 1.8 million domestic earning wiht. A total of 71.2 domestic earning and worldwide earning of 139. Million. Which would be an impressive amount had the film not cost 180 million dollars to make.

“Christy” couldn’t even crack the top ten with an opening of 1.3 million. The worst in movie opening history. Which I believe is heavily due to its lack of marketing. Which the film received next to nothing in the terms of marketing.

As someone who sees 3-5 movies a week in theaters, I never seen a single trailer for the film in any screenings. I only knew and was excited for the film due to festival buzz and reports.

Shawn Levy is directing Ryan Gosling in a new Star Wars movie.

By: Dominic La-Viola

It should come as no surprise that we are getting a new “Star Wars” film, and no, I’m not talking about the “The Mandalorian”  and Grogu that’s coming out in May.

We are getting a sequel to the very mixed-received trilogy, deemed the sequel trilogy by fans. To clarify, this isn’t the original trilogy, which was released in 1977-1983. Also known as Four, Five, and Six, or the prequel trilogy, it was released in 1999-2005, or known as one, two, and three.

But seven, eight, and nine, released in 2015-2019. To which this newest installment is called “Star Wars: Starfighter,” which takes place five years after the events in ”Rise of Skywalker.”

The film has been in production since August, but it has, or we’ve just learned, that it’s added its latest cast member.

Matt Smith, most known for his role as the Doctor on the ongoing and incredibly popular BBC series “Doctor Who,”. Along with being in other popular series, including “House of Dragons,” and is starring in a “Terminator” and Marvel project with “Morbius.”

It is unclear who he will be playing, as all characters and plot notes are under wraps, and nothing has been announced yet .

With Shawn Levy in the directors chair. There is a good possibility that this, might just be a film fans can agree on. Then again, not since the original trilogy have the fans agreed on anything about the franchise.

Whether or not the film is going to be strong with the force is uncertain. However, one thing is certain, “Star Wars Starfighter” hits theaters in 2027

No Need To Scream, Shout Factory Isn’t Going Anywhere

By:Dominic La-Viola

Before going and buying that overpriced, gouged Shout Factory Blu-ray. Read this first.

As an avid physical media collector myself, I was in all when I first heard the news about Shout Factory shutting down. I found myself in one of those dark and gloomy moments.

Thinking is the beginning of the end of physical media. Have the tides finally turned?

It seemed that the news of the shutdown had been all over my social feeds, and people’s reactions were stronger than I would have imagined.

Now, honestly, I found it hard to believe that one of the most sought-after labels was going to be closing its doors. It couldn’t be true.

Come to find out, it’s not. People online, of course, were spreading false information. Who would have thought, because everything you read online is correct? It has to be….

Shout Factory isn’t closing its doors; it simply shut down its standalone website and now shares one with its parent company’s other media outlets.

GRUV.com. Despite these changes, Shout! Factory remains committed to releasing physical media, with new titles still planned.

So there’s no need to worry or panic buy those overpriced Shout Factory releases on eBay for ten times what the site would sell them for.

Zoey Duetch Talks “Nouvelle Vogue”

By: Dominic La-Viola

“I didn’t know how real that was,” she recalls. “But the point is, this movie has lived in Rick’s heart, his mind, and his soul for a long time. So it’s beautiful to see it come to fruition.”

Zoey Duetch talked with Variety about her upcoming film “Nouvelle Vogue,” the film that tells the story of the making of Jean-Luc Goddard’s “Breatheless.” The 1960s film that started the French New Wave.

During her interview with Variety, she talks not only about her role in the film and the prep in which she had to go through. Starting with taking French lessons for two years. In order to be able to speak French for the film, during the scenes in which Seaburg’s character spoke in the film.

She went on to say that this film started off as a conversation the two of them had (her and Linklater) while on the set of “Everybody Wants Some,” eleven years ago. When the actress was just 19.

The thought that this whole film sprouted from a conversation on the set of his spiritual sequel to “Dazed and Confused” is simply mind-boggling .

I’ve been a huge fan of Richard Linklater and his work, since first discovering him and honestly, the more he does, the more I grow to appreciate his dedication and passion.

This isn’t the first film of his that he spent over a decade developing and/ or filming. All while creating and making other projects. “Boyhood” was a film that he shot over 10 years. Allowing us to watch as these actors grew up and others grew older on screen in real time.

Creating a story that has yet to be matched on that level. It’s his dedication to his work and the world of cinema that really separates him from other filmmakers.

Duetch had this to say when comparing Linklater to Goddard: “Godard is this spontaneous, no-script, lightning-in-a-bottle director, and Rick is just as much rehearsal time as shooting time.”  “But I do think that is the tether between them. Is their artistic integrity, their authenticity, their drive to make what they need to make inside of them.”

Which I think is one of the highest compliments one can give a director. To compare them to someone who is their idol, or in the very least someone whom they have drawn inspiration from.

From what I’ve seen of Goddard and know of his work, they do share a very similar career path. As both started out in indie film, they went on to do some big-budget projects, but stayed focused on stories that matter to them.

Not to mention, they were both cinephiles long before being filmmakers and continue to be so, long after they started.

It’s one of the things I admire most about Linklater: his what seems to be endless knowledge on and about films. Watching him speak in commentaries and interviews about movies is a pure delight.

The fact that he’s making a movie about, arguably one of the most influential movies of all time, is something special within itself. Zoey Duetch starring in the film is an added bonus, for me anyway. For I’ve been a huge fan of hers since first seeing her in “Good Kids” back in 2016 and seen pretty much every film she’s been in since.

I, for one, can’t wait to see this film, and I am hoping that I have the opportunity to see it on the big screen in a theater. Hopefully, earlier than Netflix’s release, which is coming soon.

Predator Badlands – The Movie Would Work So Much Better If It Was Simply Called Badlands .

By: Dominic La-Viola

All Hollywood green lights anymore are sequels, reboots, and remakes. Something that is said and I hear all too much on the internet.

Yet it seems as if no one ever mentions the movies that are original spec scripts or play out like one. That simply get renamed to make it more marketable.

Something that has been done plenty of times in Hollywood over the past 30 years or so, that I know of, and probably even longer than that.

The film opens telling us pretty much what we already know. That the Predator hunts alone, has no friends, and there is a third line in which I don’t remember. Yet none of that is relevant because the film goes on to break every single one of those rules.

From the opening shoot, something feels off. There’s something that doesn’t quite feel right.  Then they start talking and that suspicion is enhanced.

Going into the movie, I was expecting a great “Predator” movie. Although that’s what I got. It doesn’t even feel like a “Predator” movie at all.

That’s my biggest issue with this film and something that threw me off and kind of turned me off for the first few minutes of this movie. The culture shock of what I was watching.

The movie throws out all the rules of what we have learned and know about the Predators, from the first film in which they were introduced.

From this point on, it only gets more and more out of sync with what the film franchise has been built around.

Once and if you can get past the thought that it is not to be seen  as a “Predator” film. But a standalone action film with a comedic undertone. The movie is actually really good.

The storyline works in the sense of a traditional three-act structure that doesn’t reinvent the wheel or try to be or create something it’s not. Even if it tries to make the Predator something he’s not.

The dialog is witty and entertaining . Making the film feel light while remaining crisp and lean. It moves the story along, adding entertainment pieces in between the training sequences. Preparing our runt of the litter to become a true predator.

Which adds to the issue of this being called a “Predator” movie and kind of weakens the film as a whole.

For if they dropped Predator from the title. The movie itself as a whole would work so much more and overall be a better movie.

Simply because the action sequences are really good for the most part. With the exception of one of the ending fight scenes, which is almost completely lifted off of “Avatar.”  Which was yet another moment that took me out of the movie.

Having the Predator take on an artificial intelligence, combat specialists robot in hand-to-hand combat. Using only handheld weapons, would have made for a much more interesting and exciting experience.

Although up to that moment, the movie offers these intense and fun moments watching our protagonist learn and overcome the challenges of this death planet. Harnessing his skills and abilities along the way.

All of the characters we meet during the journey are fun and charming in their own ways, creating a connection making you care what actually happens to them.

In full, making you root for the character who up to this point has always been the antagonist, and it works.

The film does redeem itself, with the final fight scene being not only good. Yet intense and emotionally satisfying enough to make you forget the previous, less enjoyable fight scene that came before.

Overall, this would work so much better as a standalone film. Not connected to the Predator name or franchise. For even the Predator himself looks like a watered-down version of what he should be.

If you haven’t seen the original Predator movies or only ever seen Prey. You will not be disappointed in this one, for it has everything going for it that you would want. All while having nothing you don’t.

Overall Rating: 3.5 / 5 Stars.

Documentary Filmmaker, Award Winner Alexandre O. Philippe Talks The Possibility Of Making A Feature Film

By: Dominic La-Viola

In an interview with Variety, award-winning documentary filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe talks openly about his next dream project. A fictional film, either a Western or horror film.

Although he doesn’t know, just quite yet because he wants to do something new and inspiring. He went on to talk about how much he loved “Weapons” and “Long Legs”, but that he could also go on for the rest of his life, just making movies about movies.

Which is something that I found so profound and intriguing. For those of you who don’t know who Philippe is or his work. He has made films such as “Lynch/Oz”, “Kim Novak’s Vertigo”, and “Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on the Exorcist” .

Films which delve into various aspects, events, and topics of historical films and filmmakers. Not trying to necessarily figure them out or expose them. More or less show what makes them tick and what drives them, and in some instances like with Lynch. Add to the mystery rather than try to expose it.

One quote  I love from the article is “People have always asked me if David Lynch watched ‘Lynch/Oz.’ He certainly never told me that. Back in March, we had a screening in the wake of his death, and, of course, someone asked about it again. A week later, I got a message from critic Matt Fagerholm. He said: ‘An old dear friend of David’s asked me to tell you he watched it and loved it’.”

“It moved me tremendously. He understood my intent was not to ‘solve’ David Lynch – that would be preposterous – but to deepen the mystery.”

Reading that truly moved me, but more importantly it reminded me of something, more importantly someone. Peter Bogdanovich.

While watching a commentary on his debut film “Targets” with director Richard Linklater. He mentioned that Peter was a film historian first; he would actually make documentaries about some of his favorite filmmakers.

What made them tick, where they drew their inspiration, what made them choose certain shots, etc. Speaking with filmmakers as famous and influential as Alfred Hitchcock himself.

Seeing that and reading this, makes me see a young Peter Bogdanovich in  Alexandre O. Philippe. So when he decides to make his directorial debut, I for one, think it’s not only going to be amazing. But something that will be as substantial as “Targets”.  For it’s that un-circumstantial love for cinema, that really drives and creates the best filmmakers.
